Are your Thermofoil cabinets peeling or chipping?

Are your Thermofoil cabinets peeling or chipping?

We recently learned that a few of our friends are experiencing problems with peeling, chipping and completely delaminating of their cabinet doors. Whether it be in the kitchen, bath, laundry or other cabinetry around their home, they all seem to have a common problem.

What is Thermofoil?: Thermofoil cabinets are made using a flexible vinyl material that is applied by heating the vinyl and molding it over medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or engineered wood.

What is the solution?  There are few options to consider if you have Thermofoil cabinetry that is delaminating.

  1. You can replace the doors with a new Thermofoil doors.
  2. You can replace your Thermofoil doors with wood doors that are painted or stained.

Thermofoil vs. Wood Cabinets:

Thermofoil cabinets contain laminate over an MDF or engineered wood core, and comes in a variety of colors.

Wood cabinets are built with wood and are painted or stained.

Note: Wood cabinets can easily be refinished to remove cracks, dents and scratches, but once the vinyl layer of Thermofoil cabinet is damaged, it can’t be repaired and must be replaced.

What we recommend:

Replacing your worn down Thermofoil doors with new Thermofoil doors would be the most cost efficient.  We can also change the style of your kitchen by refacing or switching out your door style.  Refacing includes new mouldings to the existing cabinets, painting or faux finishing the cabinets and all new doors. We also can install new drawers with soft-close hardware - and who doesn’t love soft-close drawers!  We can make your current dated kitchen look like a brand new for far less then all new cabinets. This is called refacing, Woodwork Solutions style, and it’s a great option if you don’t intend to alter the footprint of your kitchen layout.

Example:

In the featured photo, we transformed this kitchen from floor to ceiling.  We didn’t alter the footprint of the kitchen. Instead we transformed it with all new refaced cabinetry, we added false panels over the dry wall soffit, which added a more updated look.  Some kitchens have empty unusable space above their cabinets, in which we’d recommend building the cabinetry up to the ceiling and adding more storage and grandness to your kitchen. But back to this kitchen… We added all new doors and soft close drawers and organizers, a new trash pullout in place of the old trash compactor, we custom built the hood above the stove and added a center island with an extra sink.

Options are endless!  We also offer many New Cabinet options. For more information and a free in-home evaluation, please call our number at 949-459-9663.

Hope to hear from you soon!
